U.S. Speaker in Minsk Discusses U.S. Role in World War II
U.S. Speaker Gerhard Weinberg visited Minsk on May 2-8 to take part in a series of embassy-sponsored events in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of VE-Day. Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Weinberg made his presentation on the "U.S. Involvement in WW II and the Allies' Joint Efforts in the Victory over the Nazis" before a number of audiences, including history specialists at the National Academy of Sciences, students and faculty at Belarusian State University, and patrons of the American Corner at the Pushkin Regional Library. The speaker also shared his views on WW II with participants in a round table discussion sponsored by the Belarusian Ministry of Defense. His program in Minsk also afforded him the opportunity to attend two official openings of the Embassy-sponsored paper show, "Victory Day in Europe: 60th Anniversary," exhibited at the Minsk City Central Children's Library and the Pushkin Library. One of the leading U.S. scholars on WW II, Weinberg's works include "Visions of Victory: The Hopes of Eight World War II Leaders" (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2005); "Germany, Hitler, and World War II" (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1995); and "A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II" (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1994, and a new edition, 2005).
