Belarusian Student Wins Earth Day Art Contest
Hanna Kutuzava, an eleven year-old student from Polatsk Oblast, was selected as one of three winners in the Earth Day Art Contest, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Along with winners from South Korea and Bulgaria, Hanna and her mother, Tatsiana Kutuzava, traveled to Washington, DC where they were recognized in a ceremony this morning at the Harry S Truman Building. Embassy representatives from each of the winners' home countries also were in attendance.
The purpose of the Earth Day Art Contest is to encourage individual awareness of and engagement in environmental issues on a personal level. Hanna expressed her personal interest in the environment through her beautiful and thoughtful artwork, titled "We Have But One Way", which displays the feet of eight children walking around the world, symbolizing the steps that need to be taken together to improve the environment.
In addition to the ceremony in Washington, the Kutuzavas and the other winners will travel later today to Disney World near Orlando, Florida where they will have an opportunity to visit Disney's Animal Kingdom, a theme park dedicated to animal conservation.
We congratulate Hanna and her fellow winners from South Korea and Bulgaria and applaud their strong personal interest in the environment.
